Like the rest of the farm, fertility and pests are managed without the use of chemical fertilizers or biocides of any kind. We use only animal manures, on-farm compost, wood & grass mulch and irrigation to provide nutrition to the plants. We have diversified the productive activities in the orchards to include intercropping of other seasonal vegetable crops such as squash. We carefully manage livestock activity moving through them. The integration of perennial tree crops, annual vegetables and animals increases the productivity of the orchards by producing a greater range of products on the same land area. They also build more diverse soil ecology and reduce the human energy required to maintain the landscape and fertility of the system.
